Beyond Molly’s Reach
The Ultimate Beachcombers Fan Journey from Vancouver to Gibsons

For fans of the iconic Canadian TV series “The Beachcombers,” a day trip from Vancouver to Gibsons isn’t just travel—it’s a pilgrimage to television history! This immersive itinerary will transport visitors from the bustling city to the charming coastal community where Nick Adonidas, Relic, and the gang created television magic for nearly two decades.
Practical Considerations
While a personal vehicle might offer the most comfort and freedom, this trip can absolutely be accomplished using public transportation. Buses depart from downtown Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal several times an hour, and buses bring arriving passengers from Langdale ferry terminal to inner Gibsons harbour.
Check BC Ferries schedules for sailing times as cancellations can occur in winter, while summer often requires advance booking. It’s also much more affordable to board the ferry as a walk-on rather than with a vehicle.
The Sunshine Coast’s microclimate often means better weather than Vancouver—but pack layers just in case. And bring waterproof footwear if you’re planning some serious beachcombing adventures.
Morning Departure: Vancouver to Gibsons

Horseshoe bay ferry terminal
Begin the day with a scenic drive to Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal. The morning light dancing across the water creates postcard-worthy views as travelers navigate the Sea-to-Sky Highway’s curves. Stop at one of the local coffee shops in Horseshoe Bay (The Lookout Coffee House comes highly recommended) for a warming cup and freshly baked treats before the ferry journey.
Pro tip: Head to the upper outdoor deck for breathtaking views of Howe Sound’s island-dotted waters. The 40-minute crossing offers spectacular photo opportunities of the coastal mountains embracing the shoreline.
Molly’s Reach was only a fictional café during the filming of The Beachcombers (1972-1990). After the show ended, the building was transformed into an actual restaurant in 1995.

MOLLY’s Reach
From Langdale Terminal, it’s just a 10-minute drive to Lower Gibsons, the heart of Beachcombers territory. The winding coastal road reveals tantalizing glimpses of the harbor where so many of the show’s adventures began.
The iconic yellow building that is Molly’s Reach served as the show’s central gathering place from 1972-1990. Once a fictional restaurant and recently reopened, it’s now a real eatery serving delicious coastal fare. Take photos of the famous facade, and consider an early lunch or at least a coffee inside this piece of Canadian television history.

Gibsons Landing
Stroll the picturesque harbor that doubled as the fictional “Gibsons Landing” in the series. This working harbor still features fishing boats and float homes reminiscent of the show’s golden era. The gentle lapping of waves against weathered docks creates the perfect soundtrack to Beachcombers exploration.
Then head up to the Sunshine Coast Museum & Archives to learn more about this region that has belonged to the Squamish Nation since time immemorial. The charming museum showcases a collection of Beachcombers memorabilia that is sure to take you down memory lane.
DETOUR:
Wander into the Gibsons Public Market for an assortment of fresh food and small keepsakes – you might even find a beanie just like Relic used to wear!
The Persephone – the show’s iconic vessel – is currently tucked away under restoration but the city has plans to place it back into the public sphere for all to enjoy.
Across the inlet, you’ll see Keats Island, which was frequently featured in establishing shots throughout the series and can be accessed by ferry from Langdale.

Beachcomb like a beachcomber
A Beachcombers day trip wouldn’t be complete without, actually, beachcombing! A number of beaches dot the coast but nearby Georgia Beach offers a small park and picnic area. Search for treasures the sea has washed ashore with each passing of the tide. Feel the smooth stones beneath your feet and listen to the rhythmic symphony of waves—just as Nick would have during his log salvage operations.

Gibsons Grub
A number of fantastic food options await around Gibsons Landing. We recommend the fresh seafood at Smitty’s Oyster House, a waterfront eatery where the ocean-to-table distance is measured in meters rather than miles. Request a window seat to watch the harbor activity—reminiscent of so many scenes from the beloved series.
FINISH YOUR TRIP:
Before heading home, pop into Tapworks Brewing Company and reminisce on a doggone great day.
Chat up the locals – you’d be surprised how many have a personal story about filming or cast members – and select amongst creatively named ales like Crispy Buoy, Dock Hop and (inside joke for locals:) One Sailing Wait.
Don’t stay too long! Check ferry schedules for the evening’s last sailing or you just might find yourself staying overnight – or longer!
